With all the talk about growth and growth management, the fact that many Montgomery County residents simply cannot afford housing gets lost in the rhetoric. But here’s the reality: We need affordable housing.
Numbers and statistics can seem pretty cold, but the simple fact is that about half of those who pay rent are paying more than 25% of their income just on housing. Studies show that many residents are paying half of their take-home pay on a roof over their heads.
This means little to no money left for groceries, medical care, clothes, a car payment or even insurance. As inflation continues to impact people across the country, we just can’t afford to live in the community we love.
“I was proud to support a resolution that created a fund that helps bring developers to the table and consider Montgomery County for their next affordable housing project,” Shelton said. “Anything we can do at the local level to attract true affordable housing, I’ll do it.”
